Transducers: I glued the transducer in hull and all I get is "---" readings.
If the system worked properly with the transducer directly in the water, then it’s most likely an issue with the installation of the transducer. With this mounting application you have limited adjustment options. The key is to make sure you choose a good location and get a good installation in the first place. However if your transducer is already stuck to your hull, then you will have to redo the installation to achieve proper readings. First you will have to remove the transducer and reattach it in a better location. Usually, dead center is the best location. But if there's a strake or a air pockets in the fiberglass there, you'll need to work around that. Testing the location, by setting the transducer in about a half inch of water while you run your vessel, is good way to find the best spot.
Here is how you begin:
1. Remove the transducer from inside the hull; place a piece of wood against the side of the transducer and tap the wood with a hammer until the transducer is broken free.
2. Remove any adhesive from the transducer with sandpaper; don’t worry if you scratch it. The plastic is 1/8th of an inch thick and can be roughed up, just don’t gouge it. DO NOT use an adhesive remover as this may damage the transducer and render it useless.
3. With the craft in the water in depths over 3 feet deep and the unit turned on, hang the transducer over the side directly in the water with the transducer pointing towards the bottom.
4. If you have readings proceed to step 6
5. If you do not get readings place the transducer up to your ear and listen for ticking from the transducer. If you don’t hear ticking check the connection to the depth sounder and also verify that the unit is turned on. Still no ticking, contact NMP customer service.
6. Place a small amount of water in your hull, place the sensor inside the hull in a bag of water or affix it to the hull with duct tape and petroleum jelly (see figure D in the following step by step: http://www.hawkeyeelectronics.com/customer_service/installation/8000.01-1 )
7. If none of the above 3 tests works then you will have to transom mount the transducer or exchange it for a thru-hull version. Visit http://www.hawkeyeelectronics.com/customer_service/fish_finder_installation.htm to see how others have done it.
