Transducers: What is a in-hull transducer?
In-Hull transducers are attached to the inside of the hull of the boat and conduct sound directly through the hull. Since fiberglass has similar sonar characteristics as water, the sonar signal can pass through the boat hull with minimal loss.
The hull of the boat must be single layer construction (not double-hulled) and cannot contain any coring or wood.
Keep in mind that any air trapped in the lamination of the fiberglass would prevent the sonar signal from passing through.
Inside the hull installations require no holes be drilled into the boat and through experimentation, an In-Hull transducer will give exceptional reading at any boat speed. There is also nothing mounted to the boat externally to get damaged or snagged.
The disadvantage is that it's more difficult to mount and to remove for future service.
The transducers supplied with NorCross and HawkEye products can be glued in-hull if the proper installation procedures are followed.
